On 4th March (World Book Day), I marked the launch of Circus Maximus: Race to the Death by giving a series of 45 minute presentations delivered online to an audience of children from Port Regis School and Motcombe Primary in age groups ranging from Years 3-8. As well as telling them about my inspiration for the book, I took them on a journey back into ancient Rome and gave them a flavour of the sort of historical research I did to conjure up the nail-biting excitement of a day at the chariot races. Pupils then used their own creativity to suggest suitable names for Roman chariot horses - based on the same principles as they were named by their owners in antiquity - and there were some fantastic ideas which in many cases showed off the children's knowledge of Greek and Roman mythology. Afterwards, there was a reading from the book and a lively Q and A session.
